Administrative Professionals Day

April 25, 2018

Nine weeks ago, I submitted my letter of resignation to my (now) former boss. It took eight weeks to advertise for, interview, hire, and train my replacement. I was working as an administrative assistant in a school district office that served the community by offering youth sports leagues, fitness classes and adult enrichment. It's not brain surgery, but there are a lot of moving parts that all need to fall into place for our customers to feel like everything worked properly. When I took the job, I had no formal training from my predecessor. It was sink or swim. (Literally. I scheduled swimming lessons.)

So I wanted to do the right thing and stick around long enough to give my replacement a decent chance at success within the first couple months. I'm happy I did, but I was eager to go back to working for myself. Thursday was my last day. I realized today that meant missing Administrative Professionals Day (Wednesday, April 25) by one week. ONE WEEK!

I hope my former co-workers are enjoying a day that recognizes their efforts. Administrative assistants are often underpaid and underappreciated. They have to know as much about the company for which they work as their bosses but operate behind the scenes. If you consider yourself an admin assistant, I appreciate you and your work. Be proud of yourself today and everyday because you run the world.

Because I am now my own administrative assistant, I will be treating myself to something nice. I haven't figured out what that is yet, but I know I deserve it. (And I can't wait to see what I get myself for Bosses' Day!)
